AR POLICIES
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program designed and proven to improve students' reading levels. Reading is a core skill deeply linked with almost every learning activity you will come across in your school career. At Kapolei Middle School, we are committed to helping our students become better and better readers.
THE BASICS
At the start of each quarter, your AR teacher will give you a ZPD range and a point goal. In order to receive an A in AR, you will need to:
1) Read books in your ZPD range
2) Take notes on a graphic organizer (GO) as you read
3) Take a comprehension quiz once your GO has been approved by your AR teacher
4) Reach 100% of your goal by the end of the quarter
5) Average 90% or above on your comprehension quizzes for the quarter
IMPORTANT DATES
You should be at 25% of your goal by------> 1/12/10
You should be at 50% of your goal by------> 1/29/10
You should be at 75% of your goal by------>2/11/10
You should be at 100% of your goal by----->3/22/10<------Last day to take a test!!!

BookFinder can be used to help you search through a catalogue of all of the books that have AR quizzes. you can serach by ZPD range, genre, and points. Students who have used this site in the past have found it very helpful in searching for a new book that interests them. WARNING: Not all books in Book Finder will be available at our library so you want to check on OPAC to see if we carry it. If we don't have it and you're just dying to read it, check out the public library, your local bookstore, or add it to your wishlist on www.amazon.com.
Home Connect
Home Connect is an amazing tool for students and families to track their progress in AR. Helpful tools such as bar graphs and a virtual book shelf will help you monitor how close you are to your goal, how many points you still need, and how many books you have read. Think of how proud you will feel to see all of those books add up! Parents can even sign up for email updates every time your student takes a quiz. Ask your student's advisory teacher for your family's log in and password for this amazing tool and get started on the path to AR success!
